AAS

Aerodrome Advisory Service 

A service provided at aerodromes without an operating control tower, giving pilots information about aerodrome conditions and traffic.


ACC

 

Area Control Centre 

A facility established to provide ATC services to IFR aircraft operating within controlled airspace at the enroute phase of flight.


ARTCC

ARTCC = Air Route Traffic Control Center
Canadian Equivilant: ACC

In the United States, an ARTCC is the equivalent of what we call an FIR in Canada and other regions in the world. 
On VATSIM, It is an ATC region responsible for providing IFR separation and traffic management in the high-level and low-level enroute environment, as well as Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) and local airports

On VATSIM in the U.S., these are the familiar identifiers like:

  • ZBW – Boston ARTCC

  • ZNY – New York ARTCC

  • ZJX – Jacksonville ARTCC

  • ZLA – Los Angeles ARTCC

These roughly correspond to Canadian FIRs like CZQM, CZUL, CZYZ, etc.


ATC

Air Traffic Control 
A service provided to manage aircraft in controlled airspace and at controlled aerodromes, ensuring safe and orderly flow of traffic.


ATM

Air Traffic Management
The integrated management of air traffic and airspace, including ATC, airspace management, and flow control.


C

CAE

Control Area Extensions
Portions of controlled airspace extending from a control zone or terminal area to protect arriving and departing IFR aircraft.


CAVOK

Cloud and Visibility OK
Meteorological term meaning no significant weather; visibility 6+ statute miles, no cloud below 5000 feet AGL, no cumulonimbus, no significant weather phenomena.


CBT

Computer Based Training
Training delivered electronically, allowing students to progress through material independently.


CTAF

Common Traffic Advisory Frequency
A frequency used by pilots to self-announce positions and intentions at uncontrolled aerodromes.


CYA

Class F Advisory Area 
Special use airspace where activities may take place that require extra vigilance by pilots (e.g., training areas).
